Gold Medal Effort

This week has been all about the Olympics and I hope you're allowing your children to watch plenty of action. My childrens' teachers have obviously recognised that getting homework out of the our house this week is impossible, so we haven't even had to negotiate that homework is a new Olympic sport. My eldest boy requested that his father and I write a note telling his teacher that he would be absent for the duration of the Olympics due to viewing committments. Our 'No' was not well received. But the Royal Exhibition has given him 2 days to feast on the TV, so we do have a compromise of sorts.

My 6 year old daughter has declared her intentions to represent Australia in swimming, hockey, gymnastics and rowing. I think she means to do this at the one Olympics, which by my calculations should be around 2020. Her swimming coach has suggested she focus on swimming given how good she is at it. She's already perfected her stand on the medal dias after reviewing the attempts by Stephanie Rice, Leisl Jones and her hero, Libby Trickett. She seems to think there needs to be a nice balance between humility and excitement. Everytime I watch that Coles ad paying tribute to the mothers who drive their kids to training I realise what my future could be like if she does keep swimming. She's a bit turned off by the banana smoothie the swimmer drinks on the way to the pool, so we might be moving on to hockey any day now!

The great thing about the Olympics is the opportunity for kids to see that to be good at something you need a talent but also a truckload of work. They can also see, that for every medal there are a lot of people who come 5th, 10th and 63rd. Life is not about being perfect or Number 1. It's about doing your best, working towards a goal and being proud of your effort. Now to just translate that to homework....
